A short trailer teases Luffy's "GEAR5" powers in One Piece
The One Piece TV anime series production team has unveiled a short 33-second PV trailer, giving fans a glimpse of Luffy's powerful "GEAR5" abilities in action. The trailer was released on One Piece Day '23, building excitement for the anime's 1071st episode, scheduled to air in Japan on August 6, 2023.
The episode's animation production staff includes director Tatsuya Nagamine (known for Dragon Ball Super: Broly), with Midori Matsuda (One Piece Film Gold, One Piece 1000th episode opening animation) and Keita Saitou as animation directors.
Additionally, the One Piece anime will feature a new ending theme song called "Raise" by Chilli Beans, while SEKAI NO OWARI will provide the anime's new opening theme song.
Toei Animation's long-running One Piece anime series began airing in 1999 and surpassed its 1000th episode milestone on November 21, 2021. Last year, the 15th One Piece anime film, One Piece Film Red, premiered in Japan and achieved significant success, becoming the country's eighth highest-grossing film and one of the highest-grossing anime movies worldwide. The anime is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and iQIYI outside of Japan.
The original manga series by Eiichirou Oda started its serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. As of July 2023, a total of 106 tankoubon volumes have been released under the Jump Comics label. Before the current series and movies, the manga also inspired an OVA in 1999 produced by Production I.G.
Viz Media is responsible for releasing the English version of the manga and provides the following synopsis for the story:
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired by the tales of the pirate "Red-Haired" Shanks and vowed to become a pirate himself. However, his life took a turn when Luffy accidentally consumed the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, gaining the ability to stretch like rubber but losing the ability to swim forever! Determined to become the King of the Pirates, Luffy sets out on an adventure, alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece" believed to be the greatest treasure in the world.
